Smartphones and Occupy Wall Street: Part 1

Over the past few weeks, the Occupy Wall Street movement – or #OWS if you’re following along on Twitter – has spread like wildfire. According to the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ page on Wikipedia, as of October 9 approximately 900 demonstrations have taken place in over 95 cities across 82 countries.

(Whose?) Life in a Day

A little over a year ago, film director Ridley Scott, YouTube and the National Geographic Foundation put out an open call for anyone on the planet to film their life on one particular day: July 24, 2010.  They then asked people to upload their completed videos to YouTube - and received more than 80,000 submissions from 140 countries, totalling over 4,500 hours of content.  These they took and condensed into a single 95-minute documentary with the tag line, "The Story of a Single Day on Earth."   I went to see the film last night, on the last night of its run in San Francisco.

Two million views of our communities

This month marks the 5th anniversary of YouTube.  YouTube content
created by ZeroDivide grantee partners have achieved more than two
million upload views, demonstrating that technology and opportunity can give
voice to underserved communities.

Social Media Continues to Play Critical Role in Relief Efforts

On Twitter and You Tube, the recovery efforts following the tragic earthquake in Haiti continue to be the main subject of interest. Online communication sites, such as Twitter, have played an especially large role as they quickly filled with Haiti-related information and ways to offer aid. Social media became central to the fundraising effort that raised millions of dollars.

YouTube for Non-Profits

YouTube is now offering channel services for non-profits.  This allows non-profits to create an account on the site which will allow for unlimited content uploading times, waiving the 10 minute maximum that is enforced on normal acccounts.  To qualify, an organization must be a registered 501(c)3 in the US.  Additional benefits include:
