Youth Media Goes Mobile

At Youth Radio, an afterschool program and youth-driven production company in Oakland, California, if a student takes out a cell phone during class, she’ll get in trouble. Inappropriate cell phone use even serves as a major plot-point in a mock fight peer educators will sometimes stage in class to teach students how to write a good story lede. A teacher whips out her cell phone in the middle of a lecture and starts chatting with a friend.

Congratulations to Youth Radio/Youth Media International for winning this year’s Peabody Award. They were given the award for Trafficked, their two-part investigative series that explores the sex trade of minors in Oakland largely through first-hand accounts of the victims.

OAKLAND — Youth Radio received an award over the weekend for investigative journalism at the annual Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. conference in Las Vegas. The award was for a series aired on NPR's "All Things Considered" titled, "In the Kennel: Uncovering a Navy Unit's Culture of Abuse."

Two million views of our communities
