Social Capital Markets 2008 (SoCap08) Conference was a comprehensive global gathering of social entrepreneurs and investors from around the world. Doing well and doing good is the mantra of a new generation of entrepreneurs and the organizations that invest in them. SoCap08 was a new event designed to bring together all of the people and organizations with a similar deep passion to change the world through sustainable businesses. Our Big Bets had an opportunity to pitch their respective youth and media ventures to potential investors, funders, and entrepreneurs. Moderator Gary A. Bolles of Xigi Media along with a panel of judges: Peter Crosby, All Together Now; R. Paul Herman, HIP Investor Inc.; and Kevin Starr, Mulago Foundation provided valuable feedback on the presentations. Building Sustainable, Scalable Business Paul Lamb was part of a panel discussion on Building Sustainable, Scalable Business. Moderated by Betsy Densmore of Social Enterprise Institute, Paul was joined by Alan Gershenfeld of E-Line Ventures and Lauri Alpern of ROI Ventures. The session presented how to create a business with high impact that pays the bills, grows in size and impact, but doesn’t require constant fundraising. New Funding Models For Nonprofit Social Ventures Laura Efurd, ZeroDivide Chief Community Investment Officer was a panel member on New Funding Models For Nonprofit Social Ventures. She was joined by Jessica Margolin of Institute for the Future and Bob Cabeza of Change Agent Productions. The panel was moderated by Paul Lamb and focused on investment dollars moving into the for-profit social enterprise space where nonprofits are increasingly deploying their own earned income strategies. The session examined up-and-coming nonprofit social venture funding models and discussed opportunities for a social market that combines the best of traditional for-profit and non-profit funding and support for social ventures.
