On July 18, 2011, Congresswoman Barbara Lee will launch Youth Radio’s Digital Media Workforce Program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the organization’s downtown Oakland headquarters. As part of her commitment to increasing opportunity for low-income youth, Rep. Lee secured a Department of Labor grant for Youth Radio to start a workforce program that prepares 18-24 year olds for careers in digital media focusing on: 1) app development, 2) online media and film, and 3) health media.

The investment from the Department of Labor secured by Congresswoman Lee makes it possible for Youth Radio to expand its workforce development programming. Given the challenging economy and record unemployment rates, particularly among low-income youth, there is a vital need for comprehensive career training. As Youth Radio helps to build the 21st century workforce, the support of the Congresswoman Lee is a critical vote of confidence in our youth and a boon to our community and its emerging media and technology sector.
