  • 400 of which currently operate SEs
  • steady growth in SEs since 1974
  • Almost half of orgs have 2 or more SEs
  • Most operate as division of parent org
  • Top SE types include: Education & Training,
    Retail/thrift shope, consulting services, food services/catering, art
  • Foundation grants the most common form of startup capital
     (50%)
  • More than 30% of orgs with SEs create revenue over $1
    Million
  • Resources needed to stimulate growth (according to polled
    SEs): capital, “other”, education & training, public policy, increased
    awareness.

2009 SEA Summit


Nearly 400 leaders from across North America and beyond came together in New Orleans at the 10th Social Enterprise Summit.


 

Jim Fruchterman, SEA Board Chair

Jim got everyone's attention with his characterization
of the state of the world, and then urged attendees to build on the
unique strengths that social enterprise offers to generate multiple
values for society.


 

Mission Inc.

Seasoned practitioners and new authors
Kevin Lynch and Julius Walls both entertained and inspired attendees
with their down-to-earth keynote on doing social enterprise well and
coping with tough times.


 

2010 SEA Summit will be held in San Francisco on April 28-30 - save the date!

The 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference took place Sunday, April 26
through Tuesday, April 28 at the San Francisco Hilton. 1,450 participants joined the movement of nonprofits using technology to
create social change!


 


 


ZD Sponsored event on Social Enterprise

 

ZeroDivide hosted a session on Going Sustainable: Earned income Programs for Technology Nonprofits


 

One model being adopted by a growing number of nonprofits and community-based media centers is social enterprise – a business venture tied to the social mission of the organization and leveraging its core strengths.


 

Panel members shared examples of how successful nonprofit social enterprises in the technology and media space, how one gets started, and where one can find funding and other types of support.


 

The session included a hands-on exercise designed to help participants identify earned income opportunities for their own organizations.

FSG Advisors 2007 Report

 

  • Foundations made $2.3 Billion worth of Mission (grants and PRIs) investments, with a 16.2% growth from 2002 to 2007

  • Smaller
    Foundations represent 44% of mission investments in 2005, with a faster
    growth rate than the big boys (Ford, Packard, MacArthur, etc.)
  • Fastest growth in PRIs, and among Foundations with assets of 200 Million or less.
  • Trending toward greater use of intermediaries (CDFIs, banks, credit unions, and venture capital)
  • increasing activity in other debt asset classes like insured deposits and loan funds, and equity investments
  • PRIs reported a 25% default rate from 2002-2007
