California’s Governor just released the final report of the California Broadband Task Force, Building Innovation Through Broadband. The Governor and Broadband Taskforce members should be commended for their recommendations which address adoption and use issues facing underserved communities in California, as well as infrastructure and build-out issues.

In addition, let me say kudo’s to the many community technology groups whose advocacy on behalf of underserved communities in California helped to make the Task Force and the subsequent report a reality. I distinctly remember The California Community Technology Policy Group (CCTPG) suggesting the creation of such a task force back in 2004 during a California Public Utilities Proceeding on Broadband.

The challenge now is to make sure that the report is not lost on our virtual bookshelf, but that the recommendations become reality – not just to make California a global leader in broadband technologies, but also to assure that every Californian benefits in the areas of education, employment, health care, civic engagement, public safety, economic status, consumer and business opportunities afforded by access and use of broadband technologies and their applications.
