The
Benton Foundation in conjunction with the
Grantmakers in Film and Electronic Media (GFEM) just released
Philanthropy's Role in Creating a Connected America,
a tool kit for foundation's on how to help communities leverage federal
broadband stimulus funds. $7.2 billion was included in
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for
Broadband (high-speed internet) deployment and adoption programs. The report encourages the philanthropic sector to help communities access and leverage these funds which will help build the nation's communications infrastructure and impact economic development, jobs, education health care etc... in communities through out the country, specifically those that are currently unserved and underserved. The report also provide practical ideas of what Foundations can do from applying for funds direction to using the power of convening to bring together partners and coalitions. The report cites ZeroDivide as an example of a foundation that is taking a bold step in applying directly for funds to support 44 broadband adoption programs across 13 states. This tool kit provides some tangible ways the philanthropic sector can aide the federal government's effort to improve the economy and create jobs! Check it out!
