Mozilla, a pioneer in free and open source software, is calling for Tech savvy volunteers to participate in Mozilla Service Week, September 14-21. Mozilla’s goal is to engage 5000 volunteers in 25,000 hours of service for community groups, schools, and individuals with technology needs. Taking steps toward bridging the digital divide, Mozilla is providing a platform to match skilled volunteers with communities who face barriers to accessing technology. Idealist and betterplace.org have partnered up with Mozilla to host multilingual service opportunity listings in English, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, French, Chinese, German, Portuguese and Polish. Organizations can post their tech project or browse through sample listings to get ideas and project templates. A volunteer with web building skills can find an organization in need of someone to revamp their website, or a school can find a volunteer to hook up their wireless network. This form of online organizing will place volunteers offline and into the community (see Jessica’s blog post on the debate surrounding “slactivism” for more information).
